Your Wedding Party To-Do List

On this week’s episode of 52 'Til I Do, we’re talking all about one of the most important parts of your wedding day: your wedding party! From helping with planning to supporting you on the big day, your bridesmaids, groomsmen, best man, best woman, your flower girls, boys, grandmas, and everyone standing by your side play a huge role in making your wedding experience special. But what exactly should they be responsible for? Today, we’re breaking down the ultimate wedding party to-do list so everyone knows how they can help make your wedding day as smooth and memorable as possible.

Step One: Consider the Size of Your Wedding Party (and Have Realistic Expectations!)

One of the first things to consider when building your wedding party is the size. Whether you’re imagining a small group of your closest friends and family or a larger group standing beside you, there is no “right” number. You may have two people, you may have twelve (or more!)—the choice is completely up to you and your partner.

However, it’s important to remember that the larger your wedding party becomes, the more planning, communication, and coordination will be involved. Every additional person adds another schedule to consider, another outfit to coordinate, another opinion to manage, and another person to keep informed throughout the process.

At Marryment, we typically consider a wedding party of 14 or more people to be a “large wedding party.” If you find yourself with a group that size (or larger), we recommend putting a little extra time and energy into planning the logistics. You may even want to consider bringing in additional support, like another coordinator, to help manage the details and make sure everyone feels prepared.

Having Realistic Expectations

We all love the idea of having every important person in our lives standing beside us on our wedding day. But sometimes, the vision we have in our heads doesn’t always match the reality of the situation—and that’s okay!

There are many reasons someone may not be able to be part of your wedding party. Family dynamics, health concerns, pregnancy, distance, financial limitations, or other personal circumstances can all play a role. It’s important to approach this decision with understanding and flexibility.

Don’t Forget About the Cost

Another important factor to consider when choosing your wedding party is the financial commitment involved. Being part of a wedding can be a wonderful experience, but it can also come with expenses that add up quickly.

Depending on your plans, costs may include:

  • Wedding party attire
  • Shoes and accessories
  • Hair and makeup
  • Flowers or personal bouquets
  • Getting ready outfits or robes
  • Travel or accommodations
  • Bachelor or bachelorette events
  • Other special details you want included

One of the biggest questions couples should ask themselves is: Who will be paying for these items?

A general rule of thumb is that if you and your partner are requiring a specific item—such as a certain color suit, tuxedo, dress, shoes, or hairstyle—it’s usually expected that the couple will cover that cost. However, if you’re giving your wedding party more flexibility and allowing them to choose their own attire or details, those expenses are typically their responsibility.

The most important thing is communication. Being upfront about expectations and costs early on allows your wedding party to make informed decisions and prevents unnecessary stress later. Remember, your wedding party is there to celebrate with you—not feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities that come with the role. Thoughtful planning and clear communication will help create a positive experience for everyone involved.

Your Rehearsal

Pro-Tip: take a listen to episode 51 of 52 ‘Til I Do to learn more about your rehearsal!

Because your wedding party will be way more involved in your big day than your guests, making sure you have a well-thought-out and organized rehearsal is key to making sure everyone knows their place and what they'll be doing on the big day.

The Day-of Responsibilities

Now, this list is specifically for the wedding party, so if that’s you, pay attention!

Being part of the wedding party comes with more responsibilities than being a regular guest. While your main job is to support the couple and celebrate with them, there are also a few things you should prepare for ahead of time so you can have realistic expectations and help the day run smoothly.

First things first: get that wedding party group chat started! This is one of the easiest ways to keep everyone on the same page, communicate important details, and make sure everyone knows who is responsible for what.

Getting Ready: The Morning Of

Steam Your Outfit Ahead of Time

If possible, steam or iron your outfit the day before the wedding. Trying to steam multiple dresses, suits, or outfits the morning of (while everyone is getting ready in the same space) can quickly become stressful and take up valuable time.

Plan for Food

Getting ready can take several hours, and everyone needs to stay fueled. Make sure someone is responsible for picking up, ordering, or organizing food and drinks for the morning.

Don’t forget to think about:

  • Who is picking it up?
  • When does it need to arrive?
  • Does anyone have dietary restrictions?

Create a Getting Ready Playlist

Music can help set the mood while everyone is getting ready! Decide ahead of time:

  • Who is making the playlist?
  • Who is bringing the speaker?
  • Who is responsible for keeping it charged?

Remember Any Assigned Tasks

The couple may ask members of the wedding party to help with certain errands or responsibilities, such as picking up flowers, transporting decor, or handling last-minute details.

If you are given a task, write it down and set reminders. The wedding day moves quickly, and it is easy for small details to get forgotten.

Maid/Man of Honor Responsibilities

If you are the maid of honor, man of honor, or a primary support person, your role goes beyond just standing beside the couple during the ceremony.

You are often the person they will turn to throughout the day if they need something. Be proactive and check in with them regularly.

Ask things like:

  • Do you need water?
  • Do you need a snack?
  • Do you have your phone?
  • Is there anything I can grab for you?

Your job is not to handle everything alone, but to help make sure the couple feels supported, cared for, and able to enjoy their day!

Ceremony Responsibilities

Most of these responsibilities will be discussed during your rehearsal, but it is still important to stay aware and know what your role is during the ceremony. Depending on your position in the wedding party, you may be responsible for things like:

  • Fixing the dress train before or during the ceremony
  • Adjusting the veil
  • Having a tissue or handkerchief available
  • Holding flowers or personal items when needed
  • Helping with any special ceremony traditions

If you are responsible for the rings, make sure you know exactly who has them, when they need to be handed over, and what the plan is for getting them to the couple. Your coordinator will help walk through this during rehearsal, but the wedding day moves quickly, so staying alert is important.

Pro Tip: Hand the Bride Her Flowers After the Kiss!

This is one of the most commonly forgotten details during a ceremony. After the couple shares their first kiss, everyone is excited and focused on the moment — which means the bride is probably not thinking about where her bouquet is. If you are the person responsible for holding the bride’s flowers during the ceremony, do not wait for her to ask for them before the recessional. Be proactive and hand them back to her so she can walk back down the aisle with her bouquet in hand!

Post-Ceremony & Reception Responsibilities

Once the ceremony is over, your role as a wedding party member is not finished! The rest of the day is about continuing to support the couple, helping things run smoothly, and making sure they are able to actually enjoy their wedding day.

Photos- Right after the ceremony, it is usually time for family photos — and this can be one of the most chaotic parts of the day. If you are part of the wedding party and know who needs to be included in certain photos, do your best to help gather people and keep everyone where they need to be. If you notice someone heading off to cocktail hour when they are needed for a photo, go grab them! This small act can make a huge difference. It helps your photographer stay on schedule, keeps things moving quickly, and takes some pressure off the couple.

Grand Entrances- We love a good grand entrance into the reception! However, remember that the main focus of the day is the couple. If you have a fun idea, special entrance, or something you want to do as the wedding party, be sure to run it by the couple first. The goal is to celebrate them while making sure the moment fits the vision they have for their wedding day.

Dinner Responsibilities- As a member of the wedding party, your main role is to support the couple throughout the day. During dinner, this can look like:

  • Asking if they need a drink or something to eat and grabbing it for them
  • Helping with a shoe change or quick makeup touch-ups
  • Assisting with navigating a large wedding dress when needed (yes, those dresses can be difficult to manage!)
  • Helping create space if the couple wants a private moment together

Sometimes the couple may want a few minutes alone during the reception. If that happens, you can help by acting as a friendly “buffer” and making sure guests give them the time and space to enjoy that moment.

Speeches- If the couple has asked you to give a speech, please do not wait until the wedding day to write it! As part of the wedding party, you want to be available to support the couple and help throughout the day — not sitting in the corner trying to write a last-minute speech. Take time beforehand to prepare, practice, and make sure your speech is something you feel confident sharing when the moment arrives.

Final Thoughts

Your wedding party is there to celebrate with you, support you, and help make your day run smoothly. The best wedding party experiences come from clear communication, realistic expectations, and making sure everyone understands their role. Whether someone is helping with logistics, calming nerves, fixing a dress, or simply being present, those small moments of support can make a huge difference. Remember, your wedding party is made up of the people you chose to stand beside you — so take the time to appreciate them and enjoy the experience together.
