When it comes to wedding planning, everyone always talks about the dress. But what about everything else that pulls your look together? In this episode of 52 ’Til I Do, we're taking a deep dive into the world of accessories, from statement pieces to sentimental touches, all while keeping your budget in mind. Because looking luxe doesn't mean having to break the bank!
If you're following along with our Marryment Planning Guide, and you're taking a look at the budget tool, you can see that the national average percentage for attire and apparel is between 7-10%. This episode is all about how to make that percentage work for you, with intention, style, and smart spending.
In Chicago and the Chicago Suburbs, the average attire budget we see can range from $2,800-$4,000. However, depending on how you're sourcing your attire for the day, you may need to adjust that number. If you and your loved one are renting or buying off-the-rack suits or gowns, this budget may seem right on target for you. However, if you or your partner are getting your attire custom-made, you may need to increase your budget to account for the bigger costs of tailoring, fittings, and materials. Custom pieces can offer an amazing one-of-a-kind-look, but they often come with a larger price tag. Lean on your priorities to make the decision that is right for you!
Do you have to wear a veil? Absolutely not! And do you need to wear or do anything just because it’s a “wedding thing”? Also no. This is your day, you get to decide exactly what you want to wear. Do we love veils? Totally! They can be beautiful, and so fun. But if they’re not your vibe, skip it. There are no rules, just do what feels right
However, if you do decide to wear a veil, there's a few options to consider. The first is having your veil custom made. This can be somewhat pricy, but custom veils tend to be incredibly well made, and turn out beautifully. Another option is buying a veil off the rack. Prices can vary depending on what style you choose. A shorter, shoulder-length veil usually won’t cost much, but those longer veils, like cathedral length veils, tend to be more expensive. Lastly, you can make your own! If you have a seamstress in your family or friend group who's willing to help, this option can be wonderful. It adds a personal meaning to your veil, and you'll only need to pay the price of the materials and fabric.
Rings! Just like veils and attire, you’ve got plenty of options when it comes to wedding rings. They can range in price from a simple $100 band to a fully custom, multi-thousand-dollar design. Whether you're going simple or extravagant, there's something out there for every style and budget.
If you're thinking about a custom ring or already have a specific design in mind, it's a good idea to start the process several months before your wedding. Custom work can take time, between design, sizing, production, and any adjustments, you’ll want to avoid a last-minute scramble. The earlier you start, the more time you'll have to find and create something perfect.
And just a reminder, choose whatever kind of ring feels right for you. If you have a vision, follow it! Your wedding ring should be just as unique and meaningful as your relationship itself.
Finding the right pair of shoes for the big day is super important. You're going to be on your feet a lot, so comfort is key! Of course, you’ll want something cute, but make sure they’re comfy, too. One of the best ways to ensure that is by breaking them in ahead of time and letting them mold to your feet. That said, if you’re wearing your kicks around the house and your feet start hurting after just 45 minutes, that’s a red flag. Those shoes probably aren’t the right fit for you, and it's 100% okay to try out a different pair.
As you plan your wedding-day attire, don’t forget the small but essential finishing touches like belts, watches, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, ties, bowties, cufflinks, pocket squares, vests, socks, and undergarments. These often-overlooked items can make a big difference in your overall look and comfort for the day!
When it comes to your wedding-day look, there are no rules, just what feels right for you. Whether you're going custom or off-the-rack, wearing a veil or not, your style should reflect the things that you love and feel comfortable and confident in. This part of planning isn’t just about looking good—it’s about being intentional. Thoughtful choices, not expensive ones, are what make your look feel luxe. So choose what makes you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to celebrate!
